Understand what may be happening
Start with a clear explanation—not assumptions
Vaginismus broadly refers to involuntary tightening of the muscles around the vaginal opening that can make penetration painful or difficult. The pelvic-floor muscles may be involved, alongside fear, past experiences and other factors. Because every person is different, individual assessment matters. Physiotherapy may include education, breathing, relaxation and gradual, self-paced strategies. You stay in control: nothing happens without your consent, you can pause or stop at any time, and an internal assessment is not required for everyone.
Private, respectful and consent-led
You should understand why any assessment is being suggested and what it involves. Sensitive examination is never automatic and should only happen when appropriate, with your informed consent.
